THE SEED BANK IS MADE OF ADOBE AND STAYS COOL IN HOT WEATHER. ADOBE COATED WITH LIME PLASTER WAS A TRADITIONAL BUILDING MATERIAL, NOW OFTEN REPLACED WITH CINDER BLOCKS AND CEMENT BECAUSE THEY ARE SEEN AS MORE MODERN, EVEN THOUGH THE HOUSES GET MUCH HOTTER. CRISTOBAL OSORIO SANCHEZ SAYS, “THE STATUS OF THE CEMENT HOUSE IS BEING RECONSIDERED.”

BUILDING

Traditional and Modern Technologies: The association built an ecological demonstration center using cob and bamboo construction, which has a facility for seed storage, a medicinal plant garden, and a vermicomposting system. Solar energy is used to power a dehydrator and the pump for the well. There are model rainwater-catchment and gray-water systems that have been duplicated at a number of association members’ homes. In other ways, people are returning to traditional building materials like adobe, which stays cooler than modern cinder blocks. “Many houses also have tin roofs, which also end up making houses get hotter,” Sanchez explains. “We have seen people replace them with clay tiles after taking our courses.”
